First Round: 2016 NFL Draft Notes

  • Five players from The Ohio State University were drafted in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft – DE Joey Bosa (3rd overall; San Diego Chargers), RB Ezekiel Elliott (4th overall; Dallas Cowboys), CB Eli Apple (10th overall; New York Giants), T Taylor Decker (16th overall; Detroit Lions) and LB Darron Lee (20th overall; New York Jets).

  • Ohio State tied Southern California (1968), Miami Hurricanes (2002) and Ohio State (2006) for the second-most first-round picks since 1967. The Miami Hurricanes (2004) is the only school with six first-round selections in one draft. In that draft Sean Taylor, Kellen Winslow II, Jonathan Vilma, D.J. Williams, Vernon Carey and Vince Wilfork were selected.

  • With the No. 1 overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams selected Jared Goff, QB from Cal-Berkley, marking the first time since 1975 when Steve Bartkowski was selected by the Atlanta Falcons that a quarterback from the University of California was chosen first overall. Most recently, Aaron Rodgers was selected by the Green Bay Packers in 2005 out of Cal-Berkley.

  • QB Carson Wentz was drafted 2nd overall by the Philadelphia Eagles. He is the fifth Football Championship Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-AA) quarterback to be selected in the first round since Division 1-A was created in 1979. The other four men were Phil Simms (7th overall; New York Giants) from Morehead State in 1979, Ken O’Brien (24th overall; New York Jets) from UC Davis in 1983, Steve McNair (3rd overall; Houston Oilers) in 1995 from Alcorn State and Joe Flacco (18th overall; Baltimore Ravens) in 2008.
  • In a dubious streak, this is the 21st straight draft the Big Ten/B1G Conference hasn’t had a quarterback selected in the first round. The last time a Big Ten/B1G quarterback was taken in the first round was Kerry Collins (5th overall; Carolina Panthers) in 1995 out of Penn State University.
  • Jacksonville selected Florida State Cornerback Jalen Ramsey with the No. 5 overall pick. Ramsey became the third Florida State defensive back drafted in the top-10 since 1989, joining Terrell Buckley (1992) and Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders (1989). Interesting enough, all three Seminoles were the fifth overall selections in their respective drafts.

  • Ole Miss T Laremy Tunsil (No. 13; Miami Dolphins), WR LaQuon Treadwell (No. 23; Minnesota Vikings) and DT Robert Nkemdiche (No. 29; Arizona Cardinals) all heard their names called in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. It marks the first time in school history that three players were selected in the first round.
