Alabama 33, West Virginia 23 (08.30.2014 at The Georgia Dome)

The Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers 33-23 in front of 70,508 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Blake Sims completed 24 out of 33 passes for 250 yards, threw no touchdowns and one interception. Running backs TJ Yeldon and Derrick Henry both ran for 100 yards each and scored at least one touchdown (Yeldon) had two touchdowns. Alabama head coach Nick Saban also talked about the debut of his new offensive coordinator, Lane Kiffin. “You know, the guy is a really good coach now, all right,” Saban said. “Y’all need to fess up to that. And most places that don’t like him is because he left and they were mad because he left. They weren’t mad about anything he did while he was there.  Just do a little research on that.”

West Virginia quarterback Clint Trickett completed 29 out of 45 passes for 365 yards and a19 yard touchdown pass to receiver Kevin White. The Mountaineers were able to hang with the Crimson Tide throughout the first half. Mario Alford ran a 2nd quarter kickoff back 100 yards for a touchdown and tied the game at 17. However, West Virginia’s inability to run the ball proved to be the difference. The Mountaineers amassed 28 yards on 24 carries as they elected to use screen passes within the Hurry-Up-No-Huddle offense. West Virginia’s next game is Saturday, September 6th against Towson at 7:30pm Eastern Time. Alabama’s next game is Saturday, September 6th against Florida Atlantic in Tuscaloosa at 12 noon Eastern Time.
