On a cool, comfortable Sunday night in Atlanta, Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium was shaken and stirred by more than 55,000 Atlanta United fans! Many people joked on social media the old relic hasn’t seen this many people rock the stadium since the University of Georgia football team played in it! This night was going to be one for the ages!
R&B legend Monica began the night with a soulful rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner! Then a frenetic match broke out between Atlanta United Football Club and New York Red Bulls. Yamil Asad was named the Man of the Match because he scored the first goal in club history and gave Atlanta the lead in the first half.
New York Red Bulls scored two goals during a six minute stretch in the second half and they walked away with the 2-1 win. However, 55,297 fans left happy because in the words of Andre Benjamin, “The South Got Something To Say!”
