Fan Perspective

Dear NFL. We Need To Talk About SB53 And The Halftime Show

Atlanta Super Bowl Twitter

In 363 days, tens of thousands of NFL fans will fill the streets in the city of Atlanta for Super Bowl LIII. The new shiny Mercedes-Benz Stadium makes the perfect backdrop for the biggest football game of the season. This is not the time to be timid, it’s a time to be bold. The Super Bowl LIII color palette will be electric red and deep blue; colors representing the bright, bold and vibrant energy of Atlanta’s thriving culture and the dramatic architecture of Mercedes-Benz Stadium, per the press conference at the Mall of America.

During the press conference, the Atlanta Super Bowl LIII Host Committee introduced a video titled “We Are ATL” featuring Ludacris and included residents of Atlanta in different locations around the city describing what the words “ATL” means to them.

With a city so rich in Black culture, now is not the time to entertain the thought of acts like Jennifer Lopez or Taylor Swift or Sting or Little Big Town. They can certainly take over the stage in another Super Bowl that’s in another city. SB53 halftime performance should represent the city and it’s culture. Take a cue from the Atlanta Hawks. They’ve had, Migos, Big Boi, T.I., Gucci Mane, Ludacris, Jermaine Dupri, Jeezy, 2 Chainz, Big Boi, Run The Jewels, 21 Savage…the list goes on and on. They know their audience. If we’re being honest, the NBA…that’s another topic for another day.

We need to hear artists like Outkast, Lil Jon and The Eastside Boys, YoungBloodz, Kilo Ali, D4L, Yung Joc, Goodie Mob, Pastor Troy blasting from the speakers.

If you don’t want to take my word from it, listen to Bruno Mars, who performed with Coldplay and Beyoncé at halftime in 2016.

There’s no doubt that if you handle the halftime show right, the ratings will be through the roof. SB52 fell to its lowest ratings in nine years. The show won’t come with any baggage *coughs* Justin Timberlake, instead, it will come with the excitement and the gift that keeps on giving because the south has continued to have something to say.
