SEC Western Division Showdown #14 LSU vs #25 Mississippi State
It’s GAME DAY! The Louisiana State University Tigers are coming to Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Mississippi to play against the Mississippi State University Bulldogs.
For the first time in over 15 years Mississippi State Bulldogs will defend their bragging rights over the Louisiana State Tigers. LSU has won 14 straight over the Bulldogs until last year Mississippi State won in Death Valley. Death Valley is also known as the place “where dreams to come to die” states LSU’s Head Coach Les Miles.
The Bulldogs have the opportunity to prove that their 2014 season and #1 ranking in college football for five weeks was not just a “myth.”
It is not going to be easy, but the Bulldogs have some offensive weapons such as their returning quarterback and 2014 Heisman candidate, Dak Prescott, a Louisiana native who was overlooked by LSU. De’Runnya Wilson, the 6’5 and 200 lbs. wide receiver, who is a physical deep threat against defensive backs. There is a pair of running backs in Aston Shumpert and Brandon Holloway ready to dominate the field. Shumpert is the more physical back and Holloway the more speedy back. So these key players will need to be firing on all cylinders to win against LSU Saturday night.
Key Matchups to Watch:
- Dak Prescott vs the LSU Secondary
It’s the All SEC quarterback vs the LSU Secondary. Prescott was able to compile over 300 yards on the LSU defense last year in the win in Baton Rouge. Prescott’s passing game is better. So, his attack will need to be a balance of passing and running to not become one dimensional to the LSU defense. He will need to have another great performance like last year to win this battle on Saturday night.
- Leonard Fournette vs Mississippi State Linebackers
Leonard Fournette is LSU’s best offense threat at running back. The Mississippi State linebackers will have to completely shut down Leonard Fournette and his strong running game. If he has a strong run game against the Mississippi State running backs; it will be the beginning of his race to the Heisman.
- Brandon Harris vs Davis Wade Stadium’s Atmosphere
This will be Brandon Harris first career start as LSU quarterback, since their season opener against McNesse State was cancelled due to the weather. However, it is going to be a hostile and loud environment filled with the clanga, clanga, clanga of cowbells. Mississippi State just set a Guinness World Record for the most cowbells rung in one place on Thursday during their “pep rally”, the Cowbell Yell. If Brandon Harris does not handle this hostile environment well on the road in the SEC West; it’s going to be a long night for the LSU offense.
It is going to be close game and this key matchups will be important in determining the winner. I’m not going give a prediction. It is going to be a great showdown in the SEC West at Davis Wade Stadium Saturday night. However, I will say #Hailstate #BeatLSU.
