This is the best time of the year. Football is still being played but basketball is back. What makes it even better is college basketball is back. Head Coach Mark Byington leads the Georgia Southern Eagles in his fourth season. In his first three season he has a record of 51-45 while at Georgia Southern. The Eagles last season were one of the youngest teams in the country but now this season they return all five starters along with eleven letterman. The Eagles are still young with only having two walk-on seniors. Georgia Southern has already played eight games, they are 4-4. The Eagles play 10 of their first 12 games away from home. Georgia Southern have already played three contest in Savannah, just 55 miles East of Statesboro, and have won all three. So far this year the Eagles are averaging 78.6 points a game this season and they have scored over 80 four times. Georgia Southern has won three of its last four and they are coming off an 85-82 loss to Florida Gulf Coast at home on Sunday. A couple of Georgia Southern’s early season losses came at North Carolina State 81-79, and at Mercer 80-67.
Friday starts a four game road trip for Georgia Southern that ends on December 20th at Winthrop. The road trip starts in Minnesota when the Eagles play the Golden Gophers. The two games in-between are in Florida when the Eagles play Florida Gulf Coast for the second time this year and then the next game is at Florida International. The last day of the year starts the Sun Belt Conference games. Georgia Southern ends the 2016 year with a home game against Georgia State which should be a good game. Also Georgia Southern will play Coastal Carolina twice this year since they have joined the Sun Belt now. Georgia Southern is looking for a good season, and should be close to the top of the Sun Belt with all five starts coming back. The Eagles should be in for a fun season and I’ll be here for it all.
Hail Southern and No Place Else!
