NFL: Free Agency Recap – Day 1

Happy NFL New Year, everyone!

Today was highly entertaining with all of the moves that took place with the 32 teams in the NFL. The news started rolling in this morning and definitely picked up as the day went on. There were a few teams that came right out of the gate at 4pm today and announced numerous additions to their rosters.

I’m going to list all of the notable signings in free agency that happened today below:

As it was reported yesterday, the Dolphins did indeed sign OT Branden Albert. Albert agreed to terms with Miami on a 5-year $46 million deal. This deal reportedly contains $25 million in guaranteed money. This is a solid move by the team to help re-build a line that saw a lot of drama last season.

The Falcons got off to a roaring start as well by signing 3 key players to fix both lines. Atlanta agreed to deals with former Dolphin DT Paul Soliai. As well as former Chiefs DE Tyson Jackson, and G John Asamoah. If you watched any Falcons games last season, you know that these were key holes that they had to fix going into the 2014 season. Good to see them being aggressive with their signings this season. The team also released Pro Bowl S Thomas DeCoud. That didn’t come as a shock to many, seeing as though he lost the ability to tackle last season. His regression from 2012 to 2013 was glaring and I don’t blame the team for releasing him.

The Tennessee Titans landed WR/KR Dexter McCluster on a 3-year, $12 million deal.

Since the Chicago Bears lost out on Michael Bennett, they had to fill that position somehow. They grabbed DE Lamarr Houston away from the Raiders. They signed him to a 5-year, $35 million deal. Safe to say that Julius Peppers won’t be in a Bears uniform next season.

One team that has been in limbo with their quarterback position is the Jacksonville Jaguars. Well today they decided to trade their QB Blaine Gabbert to the 49ers for a sixth-round draft pick. Now, they look to the draft board to see all of the available QBs and hope to rebuild their franchise and head in the right direction.

The Eagles snatched S Malcolm Jenkins from the Saints. Jenkins signed a 3-year deal worth $16.25 million.

The saddest news of the day had to come about an hour ago when Darren Sproles found out about his potential trade on twitter. With today’s technology, that was bound to happen. But it’s never nice to see a player informed of their status online before they hear from the team.

There will surely be more signings as the week progresses, especially since there are still some key players left out there. Many will be visiting teams this week and seeing the offers that are out there. As updates come in, we will post and make sure you’re up-to-date on all information.
