The North Carolina Tar Heels have brought the Wooden NCAA Championship trophy back to Chapel Hill. UNC defeated Gonzaga by a final score of 71-65 in hard fought game. This win could be considered somewhat of a redemption game for UNC as they lost in this very same position last year.
North Carolina found themselves in a bit of a déjà vu situation as the Tar Heels found themselves leading by on one point… just as they had in last year’s championship game. UNC decided to rewrite the final chapter this time around with a little luck. UNC guard Kennedy Meeks hand was out of bounds as he grabbed the ball in the final minute. Luckily for UNC the play was not reviewed and they gained possession of the ball. The Tar Heels would make the most of this opportunity as Senior Isaiah Hicks made the go-ahead basket that would end up being the final nail in the coffin.
Gonzaga did have a slimmer of hope only down by three points. Gonzaga gave the ball to Nigel Williams Goss whose two-point attempt was ferociously swatted. From there North Carolina scored a fast break dunk which finally put the game out of reach. UNC had finally achieved its ultimate goal, return to the championship and finish what they had started last season
UNC’s remarkable run through the NCAA tournament was expected but as a one seed an enormous amount of pressure was placed upon them to return to the championship. They refused to fold under the pressure and with their victory the 2017 Tar Heels have successfully stamped their place amongst the champions.
