The University of South Carolina have stunned the sports world with their remarkable play in the NCAA tournament. With their most recent win over the No.4 seed Florida Gators the Gamecocks are headed to the Final Four for the first time in school history.
Florida came out the gates hot as the Gators took a 40 – 33 lead into halftime. It seemed as if USC was beginning to get stage fright under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden. Once the second half began all doubts were put to rest. USC picked up its defensive intensity which got them back into the game. Their stifling defense did not allow the Gators to convert any of their 14 attempted three pointers in the second half.
The game came down to the wire but the Gamecocks held onto victory as their defense forced the Gators to commit key turnovers late in the game. Another key to victory for USC was Senior guard Sindarius Thornwell. Thornwell poured in 26 points as he carried the load offensively for USC throughout the game.
This is a Cinderella story for the ages as no one in their right mind would have predicted that USC would even manage to win a couple of games in the tournament. To put this in a historical perspective USC had not won a NCAA tournament game in 44 years. Even more astonishing is the fact that the Gamecocks had not won a NCAA tournament game since 1973. So, this streak of four consecutive victories is astounding to say the least.
The Gamecocks will play their next game against Gonzaga on Saturday at 6:09PM. With the eyes of the college basketball world upon them, USC will look to stamp their place in history with a victory on Saturday.
