Fan Perspective

Still Hate Kevin Durant Now?

Let’s talk NBA Fans—Golden State has taken the first 2 games of the NBA Finals.  This does put a bit of heat on Cleveland.   The play of Kevin “KD” Durant has been unstoppable. LeBron James and the Cavaliers have not found an answer for “KD” yet.  I expect the Cavaliers to come out on Wednesday ready to take Game 3 at home.  It will not be easy because Durant is clearly on mission to win a championship ring.

With that being said; are we as fans still criticizing Kevin Durant for leaving Oklahoma City and joining Golden State?  Let’s talk about it!  Before we start; let it be said the views and opinions on this topic are strictly my perspective.

I was having this conversation last night with a friend of mine while watching the game.  He stated that he longer like Durant as much as before and thought it was an easy move for “KD” to go Golden State.   Of course, I asked him, why? “Is it not the same thing that LeBron did a few years back when he left Cleveland and went to Miami?”

He said, “The difference is that LeBron went to form the Big 3 and not the Big 5 to win a championship.”  Basically, he was saying that Kevin Durant was already joining a championship team or “stacked” roster instead of building a championship team with Oklahoma City.

In my opinion, I am not sure that I agree with my friend’s opinion about Kevin Durant going to the Warriors.  Here is why.  The NBA is a sports entertainment business, which means it is still a business. Yes, it is a business that entertains basketball fans, but still a business.  This is not the NBA of the 90’s and early 2000’s where players like Larry Bird, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Michael Jordan, and the “Bad Boys” of Detroit built a championship team.  It just does not happen in the league now.  There is a lot more unrestricted free agency in the league right now.  So, Kevin Durant used his free agency to position himself to return back to the Finals and win a title.

I feel that Durant did not want to be included on the list of great NBA players like Reggie Miller, Karl Malone, and Charles Barkley, who were with one team most of their NBA careers; and did not win a NBA title.  In this era of the “modern day NBA of high offense” of basketball; along with social media driven times, the goal for NBA fans is winning a title.

Kevin Durant said, in an interview with The Undefeated that it was the “100 percent correct decision, win or lose to join the Warriors.”  If Durant is good with his decision; then we as fans should just be good with his decision.

I expect that we will continue to see more unrestricted free agency in the NBA and more players positioning themselves to win a NBA championship ring.  This is just my opinion.  Let me know what you think…. FansFavorite Fans!!
