Titans Defense Shines in Rescheduled Scrimmage

Monday night, the Tennessee Titans hosted their scrimmage at Nissan Stadium after it was rescheduled from Saturday due to inclement weather.

The fans that attended the 6pm scrimmage they were rewarded with an autograph session and an unexpected treat: rookie defensive end Mike Smith sung the Star-Spangled Banner.

The defense was ahead of the offense last night. Most notably, outside linebacker David Bass ripped the ball away from wide-receiver Dorial Green-Beckham’s hands and came away with an interception. Quarterback Marcus Mariota was caught staring down a receiver and was intercepted by safety Daimion Stafford. Cornerback Cody Riggs broke up several passes and defensive tackle Jurrell Casey got penetration several times.

“(The offense) did some good things,” said linebacker Brian Orakpo. “Defense is always ahead of offense throughout training camp and throughout the beginning — that is just football in general. I thought they did some good things out here. But I really believe our unit is very, very talented and we just have to keep it up and make our offense better.”

However, it wasn’t all strawberries and cream for the defense.

Mariota led an impressive two-minute drill and found Rishaud Matthews for a touchdown. Also, newly-acquired wide-receiver Andre Johnson caught a touchdown pass. Finally, the University of Alabama contingent of the Titans got in on the act. 2nd round pick Derrick Henry scored a touchdown with guard Chance Warmack and fullback Jalston Fowler leading the way.

“I had the best view,” Titans Head Coach Mike Mularkey said. “They had great vision and I loved that they pressed the holes. You want them to get the defense to commit. They set up their runs. They split some (tackles). Those were real runs, especially down in the red zone. Those were real plays.”

An estimated 9500 fans attended the rescheduled scrimmage. The Titans will play their first preseason game Saturday, August 13th against the San Diego Chargers at Nissan Stadium in Nashville. Kickoff is 7pm.
