The NFL HBCU Combine

The official NFL Scouting Combine (NIC) took place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on February 23rd through March 2nd. But before this annual event took place it was reported that the NFL planned on hosting a separate scouting combine for HBCU players. This initiative was created to give HBCU players an opportunity to be seen if they did not receive an official invite to the National Invitational Combine (NIC) in Indianapolis.

Now, personally, I didn’t like this idea because I can think of a few things the league could’ve done before creating another combine. I feel like dedicated slots for HBCU players in the NIC would work and that this second combine is like a bigger yet extended Pro Day. But I will save my thoughts about this until after this takes place. There’s also a Regional Combine Invitational that will take place around the same time of the HBCU Combine at Miami Dolphins’ Baptist Health Training Facility on March 27-29, 2020.

Two new combines… More opportunities for players to level up… What more can we ask for? Well my first thought would be coverage. I wonder how much press these combines will receive and if any of the 32 NFL teams will send their staff out to support or even scout. Again, I will hold my judgment of this initiative but just know I will be watching to see what happens.

Format for the HBCU Combine:

  • Friday, March 27: Measurements and Club Interviews
  • Saturday, March 28: On-Field Workouts

Format for the RCI:

  • Saturday, March 28: Measurements and Club Interviews
  • Sunday, March 29: On-Field Workouts

Prospects for the 2020 International Player Pathway program will also participate at the RCI*
