After a rough start for the SEC Conference as a whole in Week 1, it is Week 2 of the season and most of the teams should rebound nicely with games this week. Here are my 3 SEC games this weekend to watch.
- Kentucky vs. Florida- Sept 10- 3:30pm- CBS
Kentucky season opener against Southern Miss could have not ended any worse. After leading the Golden Eagles 35-10 at halftime and then losing the game. Florida started off rocky against UMASS. The Gators had lots of defense and an offense that was not able to move the ball at times.
However, Florida does have a 29-game winning streak over the Wildcats. It is the longest active winning streak over any opponent and it is tied for fifth longest winning streak. So, I do expect the Gators to use this as motivation to win this game against the Wildcats. The Gators’ offense was not impressive in the win over UMASS, but QB Luke Del Rio showed a solid performance. The rest of the Gators’ offense will have to get going this week.
Kentucky’s defense was not able to stop Southern Miss’ offense was once it started to get going. However, the offense behind the passing attack of QB, Drew Barker look great last week. He will definitely need to have a stellar performance to pull off a win against Florida in “The Swamp”.
- South Carolina vs. Mississippi State- Sept 10- 7:00pm- ESPN/ESPN 2
The storyline here is Mississippi State losing to South Alabama in their season opener at home. There are bad losses and then there are really bad losses. This was a really bad loss for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have found out “life after A.D.” (after Dak Prescott) is going to be harder than expected. Mississippi State now opens conference play with South Carolina coming to Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville.
South Carolina started the Will Muschamp era with a win, although not a dominant win, over Vanderbilt. The offense only had 308 yards, but the Gamecocks’ defense held Vanderbilt to 242 yards and 10 points to win the game. South Carolina is going to be looking to start this season off 2-0 with a win over Mississippi State.
Not so fast…. South Carolina still does not have a lot depth on their roster and the offense is not a high powerful attack to win this game. Mississippi State should bounce back and beat South Carolina, but there needs to be some leaders to step up on this Bulldogs’ team or it will be a long season. The Bulldogs’ defense should be better than last week and the offense, and special teams will do enough to the win the game.
- Tennessee vs. Virginia Tech- Sept 10- 8:00pm- ABC
After a bit of struggle with Appalachian State on last Thursday opener of the college football season, the Vols are heading to Bristol, TN to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies. This game is being played in Bristol Motor Speedway. So, everything at the speedway is being converted to a college football stadium look for this game.
The Vols did not have a dominant performance last game, but give them credit. They did find a way to win the game. The question is can QB Joshua Dobbs and the Vols’ offense bounce back and have dominant performance against Virginia Tech? The Vols’ offensive line will have to do better to give Dobbs a chance in the game.
Tennessee should have a better performance than game against Appalachian State. It not going to be a blowout game of the Hokies. Virginia Tech is a good team and does have play makers. It will be close game, but Tennessee should win at Bristol Motor Speedway.
