Fan Experience: UCF Fan Fest 2016

Isaac Babcock

I am excited to be a Campus Ambassador for Fan’s Favorite Fan on behalf of University of Central Florida. I have deep roots with UCF and bleed Black & Gold. The opportunity to be able to represent my school and our athletics is nothing short of amazing.

Last season, several UCF sports proved less than stellar results. Baseball ended the season with a record of 25 – 34, Volleyball 15 – 17, Men’s Basketball 12 – 18, and Women’s Basketball suffered a 7 – 23 record. However, the biggest disappointment was UCF Football with a record (or non-record) of 0 – 12. That’s right, UCF Football failed to win a single game.

UCF shook things up by obtaining a brand new Athletic Director, Danny White. Since then, White has heralded several changes within UCF Athletics. Baseball is looking to turn around with new head coach, Greg Lovelady. Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams both have new head coaches with Johnny Dawkins presiding over the men and Katie Abrahamson-Henderson heading the women. However, one of the most exciting changes is the new Head Football Coach, Scott Frost. Frost has played professionally for the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The most impeccable part of his resume though, was his tenure as the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterback Coach of the Oregon Ducks. Frost was part of the Oregon team that was led by Marcus Mariota when they beat the undefeated FSU in the 2014 Rose Bowl.

With all of the new additions, UCF is aiming to be competitive once more. This is an exciting time for current student athletes as they have new direction to lead them to victory. This is also a great time for UCF to attract top recruits who are looking to stand out. Moreover, this is a great time for UCF fans to be able to continue old traditions, set new traditions and really be proud of the work the student athletes are putting in. UCF has continued to climb in ranks, especially since becoming part of the American Athletic Conference. Hopefully, UCF can continue to build.

For myself, I am truly excited to see the change. I have been involved in the UCF community far beyond starting my UCF career. Like most youth who grew up in Central Florida, UCF gave us a team to cheer for. Especially UCF Football, in the absence of an NFL team in Orlando.

This past Saturday, August 20th, UCF hosted its UCF Football FanFest at Bright House Networks Stadium. This event was open to the public with Free Admission. Here you could meet the UCF Football Team and coaching staff to get autographs. There was also an individual meet and greet with Coach Frost. Fans were able to tour the inside of the Football locker room and had a chance to take pictures with Knightro, UCF’s friendly mascot. The rest of the UCF Athletics family was present as well to sign autographs and meet fans. For young children and big kids at heart, there were games, inflatables, a photo booth, food, and music.

It genuinely was a fun time. The atmosphere was fun and light hearted, but there is no doubt that the UCF Athletics department means business this year. Again, I am excited to see how all of the teams improve this year. But I am definitely ready for our Football Knights to Charge On!
