There are good reasons why weapons aren’t allowed in sporting events.
Fan is short for fanatic. Fans can get really emotional and rowdy about their favorite sports team. When alcohol is added, those emotions and rowdy behavior multiplies by ten, and often leads to fights in the stands or at tailgates.
Which is why weapons, especially guns, are not allowed in stadiums.
However, three Washington state legislators thinks sports, crazy fans, alcohol and guns are a good mix. According to Deadspin, Republicans Matt Shea, David Taylor and Bob McCaslin have introduced a bill that would allow concealed carry weapons in stadiums and arenas in Washington.
In its current form, the bill would keep public stadium authorities, and private groups that operate facilities under a public stadium authority, from setting any rules against concealed carry weapons.
The proposed bill also has a section, which would stop individual cities or neighborhoods from finding a workaround:
A local governmental entity may not, whether by law, ordinance, regulation, rule, policy, or contractual agreement, prohibit persons with a valid concealed pistol license from carrying a concealed pistol in any stadium, convention center, arena, or similar facility, or on the grounds of any such facility.
I hope there are enough Washington legislators with some common sense who will vote against this dumb bill.
But after this last election, it’s hard to tell if there is any more common sense in politics.
